Vigiling- often referred to as sitting vigil—is the dedicated act of accompanying and providing a loving presence to an individual during their final days, hours, and moments of life. It is a sacred space that focuses on maintaining the comfort, dignity, wishes and peace of the dying person, while ensuring they are not alone (unless that is their explicit wish). A vigil can take place in a hospital, a hospice facility, or the comfort of a person’s own home.
During the vigil process, the goal is to create an environment that aligns entirely with the individual's values, culture, and personal wishes. This can include sensory elements such as playing favorite music, adjusting lighting, managing aromas, and coordinating who visits the bedside.
While sitting vigil, a Doula's role is to act as a supportive guide and steady presence, allowing families to simply be family. Making sure the emotional, physical, and spiritual wants of the person passing are being upheld. Educational support before and during the active dying phase is also very important for any loved one taking part during this time. A Doula can explain what to expect to loved ones in hopes it lessens their worries and concerns during this time, so they can just be present during the last moments.
